Sharing experiences both far away and right at home

Cabin Weekend

Cabin Weekend

Cabin Weekend. The best weekend of the summer. I have spent so many weekends at this cabin. While we didn't travel a ton growing up, we spent a lot of days adventuring here. My mom cooked and read on the porch all day, my dad napped and took us fishing in the evening, and us kids dunked our bodies in that cloudy sandy river alllllllll day. Either with neighbor friends that we were so pumped to see at their cabin the same week/weekend as us or just the three (then four) of us playing pretend games (usually the story ended with making mud pies out of rocks, sand, and a frisbee for the bad guys).

The first summer that Zach and I were dating, he found out my family had a cabin and immediately rounded up whomever was free to go for the weekend. I have no idea why I never thought to take my friends in college, but going to the cabin as an adult is JUST as adventurous and relaxing as going as a little kid.

We have gone one weekend a summer ever since! Always a different group of people and always a different experience.

This year, we had a golden group of 15 that were to join us after work on Friday. Zach and I had a great relaxing day with just the two of us planned for Friday. Sadly, I got nauseous and sick from some medications and laid in the hammock and napped all day. I didn't get to eat the burgers and beer that we happily picked out at the supermarket :(

Zach was the best and set everything up for me.

Almost everyone that was due to come got a terrible virus that was horrendously disabling. So that night 4 friends made it out and found a quiet Emily and a rambunctious Zach.

We sat around the fire, and all was well! There is obviously something so great and relaxing about a fire in the summer, but it was sweet to get to know each other better far away from home and our regular hangouts.

The next morning, eggs and bacon were whipped up and we drank coffee on the porch (my favorite part of the day). We played tennis and fished, and Zach caught a huge stinky catfish!!!

OBVIOUSLY overworked, we all grabbed a hammock and took naps.

Yard games commenced and then we set out into the river! You should check out Zach's photos from the river :)

The river got tiring so we retreated to showers and sunsets. AND a game of cribbage (my other favorite part of the weekend).

Sunday morning is always sad for me. I hate leaving and packing, but it's gotta end sometime. That's what makes it great! It is a great getaway real quick and is full of a bunch of relaxing things, but then you go back to the comforts of home and are full of rest to work hard at your job. For me, anyway.

We stopped in Omaha for lunch, and RAN INTO HANNAH!! She lives nearby the Old Market and I had a feeling she would be in one of the restaurants or coffee shops. We got our old time favorite, Ted & Wally's ice cream before heading home.

And now we are home! For a while anyway. Working hard at our jobs and doing projects and hanging with our friends in between. Here's to summer and how it keeps giving sweet things from Pleasant Street to the river bank.
