Farmer's Market Weekend
Zach and I sleep in on Saturday mornings. We wander to a supermarket and get whatever we thought up for breakfast and then we make it and drink coffee and start our day around 10:30-11.
Some day we will have kids and we will think back on these mornings fondly. However, Zach was in San Antonio this weekend, so I got up SO early (7:00 haha) and went to the Farmers Market! I have not been this summer yet, but I am WAY glad we went when we did, it was already so busy at 7:40.
We got coffee pronto and beelined for breakfast burritos in nan bread from HoQ.
And then we saw the things. Ate the samples. Ran into friends. Daydreamed. Made future plans. Saw the puppies and admired the babies. Ya know.
Okay maybe I am a total farmers market newb, but YELLOW watermelon???! Hi, WHHAT?
I just want you all to know it is an increasing daydream of mine to have a HUGE garden. Florals and veggies and fruits and herbs. And chickens and a bee hive. A green house as well for the off season :)
If I was a woman with a lot more time, I would vend at the market every Saturday.
I decided to go with zucchini and blueberries. My friend from work sent me a really great recipe for Zucchini - Blueberry Bread.
She made a few substitutions and then I made a few substitutions to her substitutions.....
1. I used coconut oil rather than vegetable oil
2. Instead of 2 1/2 cups of sugar, she (and I) used:1/4 cup brown sugar + 3/4 cup honey
3. She drained the zucchini water and used only 1 cup of flour instead of 3 cups. I used 3 cups of whole wheat flour and STILL drained the water.
If I did it again, I would still use 3 cups of flour, but keep the extra liquid from the shreds. My bread was a bit dry!
But, if you are into moist bars (haha), you do like her and do 1 cup of flour and drain the water.
It was the PERFECT Emily Saturday.
After the market, Delaney and I walked back to Sherman Hill, I napped, cleaned, baked, and the only thing on the horizon was an evening on a deck with wine and pizza and my friends.
And it was perfect!! Zach came home last night, and it's so good to have him back!
But, I am so pro - get your individual time apart. It feels great and keeps you an individual with your own interests. For us, anyway. Everyone is different!
I don't know that I will get to the market again this year, but I am going in on a local farmer's produce share this fall!
These are the things that get me excited.
Signing off!
