Grills and Chills
FOURTH OF JULY WEEKEND!!!
So, I have spent just about every 4th of July by a river, lake, or at least at a cabin with a bunch of people. You know, doing the normal American things.
Staying in Des Moines allllllll weekend seemed like a decrescendo from the past two decades of celebrations. But, really. It was awesome. Zach and I got to spend a ton of time together, I got a lot of much needed rest, we got to have Saturday food crawl three times in a row, and we got to hang outside with our friends every night!
Zach gave me a "feel better" Patagonia hat to kick off the weekend! I was weirdly sick on Thursday night. I think the hat made it all better :)
Saturday we slept way in (thank you very much no kids life) on Saturday and swung over to The Library for some breakfast omlets and gravy burgers. We had plans to rent a pontoon with our friends and hang on the lake all day. But, sadly, it was cold and rainy all day.
We stopped at our friends house for a SECOND breakfast of crepes :) :) :)
I love living in our apartment, but getting to be in their house is a treat for all of us Sherman Hill dwellers. Also, they used to be our neighbors. So we are of one kin.
After a bunch of laying on the couch and debating what to do in leiu of the pontoon, our friends decided it was time to also get off of their couches. We headed to a park and played Kubb. Anyone, anyone?? It's awesome! Basically throwing wood blocks and wood blocks...but it's actually hard.
We went on a walk, laid in the hammocks, and grilled a bunch of meat and ate Dilly Bars!
Sunday....we went to church and ate Jethros!
I took an extremely long nap and watched Fixer Upper.
We had the windows wide open all weekend, and it has been DREAM WORLD.
I went on a walk and sat and actually had time to think and journal and it was so good.
We went to our friends house and grilled again :) and played more Kubb!
The city was dotted with fireworks on our drive home! We had a little wine and watched Whiskey Tango Foxtrot. Tiny Fey, you're great at what you do. AND THERE WAS AN ENTIRE NEXT DAY TO BE HAD!!
Okay, embarrassed/not embarrassed. We slept in until 11?! I know! I know. :) It was a weird feeling and a great feeling.
We walked down to the corner market and had honkin pastries (me) and coffee.
We ran some errands and found ourself at El Bait Shop sipping an afternoon beer.
We tried a new taco truck! Taquieria Guadalajara.
Although we went in with open arms and open hearts, it wasn't quite as good as our neighborhood taco truck! It wasn't bad by any means, but just different and the meat wasn't quiteeeee right (in our snobby taco opinion...)
We capped off the weekend by welcoming Casey to Des Moines! As if it wasn't enough charred meat and brownies, we did it one more time!
And there went another 4th of July! Happiest Birthday, America.
